Assessing Cultural Competency in Peer-Run Mental Health Programs
Working collaboratively with the Support Technical Assistance and Resource (STAR) Center, we developed this cultural competency guidebook for use by mental health peer-run programs and self-help groups. The guidebook also is applicable to traditional mental health and rehabilitation programs. Five organizational areas are the focus of efforts to enhance cultural competency. These areas are: 1) Administration, Policy, and Guidelines; 2) Peer Providers and Group Leaders (i.e., Staffing); 3) Services and Support; 4) Program or Group Environment; and 5) Communication and Language Capacity.
We conducted a pilot study of the impact of this assessment in 9 peer-run programs in the U.S. Results suggest that programs benefit from assessing their cultural competency, and implementing program-specific strategies to improve their ability to engage people from across diverse groups.
