Analysis of Mental Health Disorders across the Lifespan

Why is this study being done?

We are examining the life trajectories of children and youth with serious mental health conditions as they enter adulthood and eventually middle age. We want to determine both individual and environmental factors that influence people’s physical and mental health and functioning across the lifespan.

What questions do we hope to answer?

  • We seek to identify individual and environmental factors that influence people’s physical and mental health and functioning as they age.
  • We plan to assess the impact of public federal and state programs like Medicaid and SSI on outcomes across the lifespan.
  • We also plan to determine whether children with serious mental health conditions continue to have those conditions as they age, and what influences persistent mental health needs.

Who is running the study?

The study is a partnership between our Center and the University of Texas-Austin.

How will this study be helpful?

Data analysis from this unique cohort will generate knowledge at micro and macro levels needed to improve child and adult mental health services. We’ll also learn about how children move from the child to adult health and mental health systems, and strategies to improve continuity of care. We’ll use these results to recommend services and policies that improve the lives of children, youth, and adults with serious mental health conditions.
